In a rain-soaked showdown at Lakeland High School, the Bayport-Blue Point girls lacrosse team defied the odds and a sluggish start to secure a 15-9 win over Nyack in the Class C regional final, advancing to the state semifinals. Trailing 5-2 after the first quarter and facing the nation’s sixth-ranked team, the Phantoms leaned into their chemistry and championship experience to stage a remarkable comeback.

Senior Ava Meyn, who played on BBP’s 2023 state-title team, delivered five goals—including three during a game-breaking 8-0 run. Fellow senior Aubrie Eisfeld added three goals and an assist, crediting the team’s unity and belief as the catalyst for the turnaround. With support from Erika Kreuscher and Sara Richardt on offense, and nine critical saves by goalie Sophia Diaz, BBP held Nyack scoreless for over 16 minutes.

Adjustments on defense and renewed energy from the bench helped shift the game’s momentum midway through the second quarter. “We started playing as a team and it just got better from there,” Eisfeld said.

The Phantoms (19-1) now head to SUNY Cortland for a semifinal matchup against Jamesville-DeWitt. With the goal of finishing what they started, this team is determined to etch its name into Bayport-Blue Point history once more.

⚾ Just a year after playing high school ball, three Long Island teens are now calling games as varsity umpires amid a region-wide shortage of sports officials. Their quick rise is part of a push to bring in younger talent passionate about the game to keep youth sports going. Newsday
