Day in History

Ad from The Patchogue Advance October 25,1929

This 1929 advertisement for Kruschen Salts showcases how marketing tactics aimed at promoting weight loss and health have been around for quite a long time. It also reflects how certain types of advertisements can be deceptive by making grand promises. Here's a comparison between this ad from 1929 and similar modern advertising:

1929 Advertisement:

  • Bold Claims

  • Vague Medical Science

  • Emotional Appeal

  • Money-Back Guarantee

 Modern Advertising:

  • Bold Claims Remain:

  • Pseudoscience and Trendy Ingredients:

  • Emotional Appeal Remains

  • Money-Back Guarantee still here

  • Influencer and Social Proof: The difference is that today's ads are more likely to use endorsements and visual evidence.

  • Regulations and Warnings: Modern health and wellness advertising is more regulated than in the past, with products required to include disclaimers or warnings that results "may vary" or that claims have not been evaluated by the FDA. Ads from the 1920s lacked such transparency.

Both then and now, advertisements often exaggerate benefits and gloss over potential downsides. The 1929 ad preys on insecurities and promises effortless weight loss and physical rejuvenation. While modern ads are more carefully worded to avoid legal issues, many still rely on unproven claims, creating an illusion of guaranteed results.

Despite advancements in advertising regulations and consumer protection, the underlying strategy of offering quick-fix solutions to health and beauty concerns has persisted across decades. Just goes to show that we may get more technologically advanced but basic human nature doesn't seem to change much.
