Arrests Made in Suffolk County ATM Burglary Spree

Suffolk County Police have arrested two men, John Mahoney and Jamie Volini, in connection with a series of ATM burglaries and attempts across the county earlier this year.

Following an intensive investigation by Major Case Unit detectives, the arrests were made on June 18. Mahoney and Volini are alleged to have targeted multiple businesses between March 5 and March 11, breaking into gas stations and shops by forcing entry through windows and doors. Once inside, they either damaged or stole ATMs.

Volini, 46, of East Patchogue, was apprehended at the intersection of Sills Road and Montauk Highway around 4:50 p.m. Mahoney, 41, was taken into custody without incident outside his home in Mastic Beach at approximately 7:10 p.m.

Their alleged crimes include attempts and successful burglaries at various locations.

Mahoney faces five counts of Burglary 3rd Degree and one count of Attempted Burglary 3rd Degree. Volini is charged with two counts of Burglary 3rd Degree, Attempted Burglary 3rd Degree, and Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance 4th Degree due to cocaine found in his possession.

Anyone with further information on these burglaries is encouraged to contact Major Case Unit detectives at 631-852-5555.

Medford Student Among Five Honored with Carey Gabay Scholarships

Five remarkable incoming SUNY students have been awarded the Carey Gabay Scholarship for the 2023-24 academic year, including Medford's own Bryan Diaz-Ximello. This prestigious scholarship, named after attorney and public servant Carey Gabay who was tragically killed in 2015, recognizes students who demonstrate a strong commitment to social justice, leadership, and mentorship.

Bryan Diaz-Ximello's journey has been marked by personal challenges and triumphs. Finding his voice in 7th grade, Bryan became an advocate for himself and others, contributing significantly to his school’s Culture and Community Committee and supporting students with learning disabilities through the Best Buddies program. A first-generation college student, Bryan earned his associate degree from Suffolk County Community College while still in high school. He will continue his studies at SUNY Oswego, driven by a passion for community support and academic excellence.

Governor Kathy Hochul and SUNY Chancellor John B. King Jr. praised the scholarship recipients for their dedication and resilience, highlighting how these students embody Carey Gabay's legacy of public service and overcoming adversity. Trenelle Gabay, founder of the Carey Gabay Foundation, expressed gratitude for the program's ongoing efforts to break down barriers for disadvantaged youth.

The Carey Gabay Memorial Scholarship covers all costs of attendance, including tuition, room and board, fees, books, supplies, transportation, and personal expenses, ensuring these students can focus on their academic and community endeavors without financial burden.
