Patchogue Nonprofit Awarded $175K TD Housing Grant

The Economic Opportunity Council of Suffolk, based in Patchogue, has been awarded a $175,000 grant from the TD Charitable Foundation. This grant is part of the Housing for Everyone program, which distributes $7 million annually to 37 nonprofit organizations within TD Bank's service areas.

These grants, ranging from $150,000 to $250,000, support independent living for marginalized community members, particularly those experiencing homelessness. The funds are intended for housing solutions such as rapid re-housing, permanent supportive housing, and transitional housing, helping those facing conditions that make stable housing challenging without additional assistance.

“These organizations are making it their primary mission to help relieve some of the most vulnerable members of our community,” said Paige Carlson-Heim, director of the TD Charitable Foundation. She highlighted the importance of these grants in creating innovative housing solutions and supporting sustainable, inclusive communities.

Since its inception in 2005, the Housing for Everyone program has awarded over $49 million to support more than 550 affordable housing initiatives. The Economic Opportunity Council of Suffolk, Suffolk County’s designated community action agency, aims to promote self-sufficiency and community revitalization. The organization assists low-income families and individuals through various services, leveraging federal, state, local, and private resources.

Suffolk County Allocates Funds for Avery Homestead Restoration

Suffolk County took a significant step in preserving its historical heritage on May 15th with the announcement of additional funding for the restoration of the Avery Homestead. Legislator Dominick Thorne and County Executive Ed Romaine led the event, joined by community members, the Focus East Patchogue group, and the Patar Historical Society.

Last year, the county approved Resolution 1515-2023 to acquire and preserve the Avery property, a historic site dating back to the early 1800s. This year, Resolution 1121-2024 adds $250,000 to the project, aimed at critical roofing repairs, fencing, infrastructure improvements, and safety measures. Additionally, the county introduced a new Suffolk County Park Ranger Relief Station at Avery Park to enhance local safety.

Thorne expressed gratitude to the Suffolk County Parks Department, highlighting the efforts of Commissioner John Janotta, Deputy Commissioner Meghan, and the parks department employees. Since the property's acquisition, they have already begun significant restoration work.

"We must always preserve history for future generations," said Thorne. "I cannot think of a better partner in this goal than my friend and colleague, County Executive Ed Romaine."

Romaine reflected on the historical significance of the property, originally purchased by Humphrey Avery from the Kachuk Indians in the 17th century. "Suffolk County is the oldest English-speaking county in New York, settled in 1640," he said. "Respecting the past gives us a clear vision for the future."

He emphasized the county's commitment to using funds from the hotel motel tax, which allocates $2.5 million for historic structures, to renovate and rehabilitate as many properties as possible.

"In the past, historic properties have not received the attention they deserve. We will change that," Romaine stated. "I will work with Legislator Thorne and our colleagues to ensure these properties get the necessary attention and investment."

The bill was signed during the event, marking a significant milestone in Suffolk County's efforts to preserve its historical sites.
