Historic Win: Bayport-Blue Point High School Claims First Lacrosse State Championship

In an exciting display of determination, Bayport-Blue Point High School Phantoms secured their first-ever state boys lacrosse championship with a commanding victory over Jamesville-Dewitt Senior High School. The final score, a testament to the Phantoms offensive strength, marked a significant milestone in the school's athletic history.

The game started with both teams struggling to find their rhythm, but the Phantoms soon took control. Treigh Tomassone's quick succession of two goals in 30 seconds ignited the team's momentum. However, Jamesville-Dewitt responded swiftly, with Lucas Patchen assisting Graham Kesselring for a goal, followed by Patchen scoring himself, leveling the playing field.

The match saw a thrilling exchange of goals. Sam Brazell scored for Jamesville-Dewitt, but Ben Morris put the Phantoms ahead again early in the second period. Maclin Keyser's two goals helped Bayport-Blue Point achieve a 6-4 lead at halftime.

Jamesville-Dewitt narrowed the gap with Andrew Laubenstein's early third-quarter goal, bringing the score to 6-5. Bayport-Blue Point then went on a 7-0 run in the 3rd and 4th periods to put the game out of reach.

Leading the charge for the Phantoms were Ryan Hannaford, Maclin Keyser, and Ben Morris, each with three goals, while Treigh Tomassone and Connor Curran each added two. This collective offensive effort culminated in a historic win, securing their place in the annals of state championship history.

Blue Point Students to Attend Bayport High School

In June 1934, a significant educational shift occurred for Blue Point students as they prepared to attend Bayport High School due to overcrowding at Patchogue High School. The Blue Point and Bayport boards of education had been negotiating for three months before reaching this agreement.

Initially, the Patchogue school district had set 1937 as the year Blue Point graduates would be excluded from Patchogue High School. However, the urgent need to address overcrowding accelerated this timeline. Consequently, Blue Point was notified to make alternative arrangements effective for the next school term.

After considering several options, the Blue Point board decided to send their students to Bayport High School, contingent upon Bayport providing a first-class high school education. Bayport agreed and planned to hire three additional high school teachers and a new principal. Stanley Piatt, then principal of Bayport, would lead the Bayport grammar school, while Walter Ormsby, former vice-principal of Patchogue High School, was appointed the new principal of Bayport High School.

Bayport High School committed to teaching all necessary subjects for a complete high school curriculum, ensuring continuity for Blue Point freshmen who had been studying at Patchogue. Additionally, a school orchestra, enhanced by Blue Point students, and possibly a music supervisor, would be established.

This new arrangement, starting in September, would initially apply to 17 graduates from Blue Point and a similar number from the previous year who had attended Patchogue as freshmen. The district would provide free bus transportation for these students. The plan was also financially beneficial, as the tuition fees paid to Bayport would be lower than those previously paid to Patchogue, resulting in savings for Blue Point taxpayers.
