Abolition of Slavery Announced in Texas on “Juneteenth”
On June 19, 1865, Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas, with news that the Civil War was over and slavery in the United States was abolished. This historic event, now celebrated as Juneteenth, marked a significant milestone in American history. Despite President Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation being issued on January 1, 1863, the lack of Union troops in Texas made it difficult to enforce.
Historians attribute the two-and-a-half-year delay to poor communication and the deliberate withholding of information by Texan slave-owners. Upon arrival, Major General Gordon Granger read General Order No. 3, which declared, "The people of Texas are informed that, in accordance with a proclamation from the Executive of the United States, all slaves are free."
This order proclaimed absolute equality of personal and property rights between former masters and slaves, transforming their relationship to one of employer and hired labor. The newly freed individuals were advised to stay at their current residences and work for wages, though many immediately left in search of family members and better opportunities.
On that day, 250,000 enslaved people were freed. Juneteenth, a blend of "June" and "nineteenth," has since become a day to commemorate the end of slavery in America. For many African Americans, June 19 is regarded as an independence day. Before 2021, nearly all 50 states recognized Juneteenth as a state holiday. On June 17, 2021, President Joe Biden signed legislation officially declaring it a federal holiday.
