Title: Bayport-Blue Point Edges Out Rye, Advances to State Class C Finals

Bayport-Blue Point overcame a sluggish start to secure a thrilling 9-8 victory over Rye, advancing to the State Class C Finals. Despite trailing 4-0 after the first quarter, the team rallied, with Ryan Hannaford finally breaking through in the second quarter. They continued to rally and brought the score to 5-4 by halftime. A tense back-and-forth ensued, culminating in the go-ahead goal by Ben Morris with just over five minutes left in the fourth quarter, taking advantage of a two-man advantage.

Hannaford led the team with three goals, supported by Traigh Tomassone with two, and contributions from Connor Curran, Maclin Keyser, and Morris, who each added to the scoreboard. Bayport-Blue Point, now boasting a 20-1 record, will face Jamesville-DeWitt (19-2), who dominated their semifinal with a 22-7 win. The final showdown is set for Saturday, June 8, at Hofstra.

The community is encouraged to support Bayport-Blue Point in their quest for the state title. Let’s rally behind our team and cheer them on to victory!

Long Island Firefighters Oppose OSHA's Proposed Safety Regulations

Proposed changes by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) have ignited strong opposition from volunteer firefighters on Long Island, who warn of significant impacts on local volunteer departments. As reported by Carolyn Gusoff for CBS New York, the new regulations aim to enhance safety but have raised concerns about their potential effects on local fire services and taxes.

Volunteer firefighters, proud of their 180 departments on Long Island that save taxpayers billions, argue that the new OSHA directives are overly broad and fail to consider the unique needs of each department. Donald Corkery, president of the Association of Fire Districts of the State of New York, criticized the proposals for imposing a uniform standard without consulting all departments.

Key concerns include the doubling of basic training requirements from 150 to 300 hours, which firefighters fear will deter new recruits. Huntington Town Supervisor Ed Smyth described the changes as "a solution in search of a problem," while Corkery warned of a recruitment crisis.

Additional requirements for chiefs' training and shortened lifespans for firetrucks further complicate the situation. Eugene Perry of the Firefighters Association of the State of New York suggested that communities might face tough choices, such as closing volunteer departments or raising taxes.

Firefighters are calling on Congress to exempt volunteer departments from these regulations. Meanwhile, OSHA defends the changes as necessary updates to outdated standards, emphasizing their intent to protect emergency responders from various hazards. OSHA has extended the public comment period until July 22 and plans a public hearing to gather more input from stakeholders.

Governor Hochul Hosts Virtual Roundtable with Advocacy Groups to Address Youth Mental Health Crisis

Governor Kathy Hochul today engaged in a virtual roundtable with parents and advocacy groups from across New York State, focusing on her legislative push to address the youth mental health crisis. With the State Legislative Session nearing its end, Governor Hochul emphasized the critical importance of passing the Stop Addictive Feeds Exploitation (SAFE) for Kids Act and the New York Child Data Protection Act.

“Addictive social media algorithms are fueling the youth mental health crisis, and we must act now,” she stated. The SAFE for Kids Act aims to restrict the use of algorithms that keep children engaged on social media platforms, while the New York Child Data Protection Act seeks to limit the collection of minors' personal data.

The roundtable included representatives from organizations like Park Slope Parents, The Sophie Fund, Inc., and the Bronx Community Foundation. Attorney General Letitia James, State Senator Andrew Gounardes, and Assemblymember Nily Rozic, all advocates for the legislation, also participated. They emphasized the growing mental health issues among young people linked to excessive social media use, including increased rates of depression, anxiety, and suicidal ideation.
