Historic Shands General Set for a Modern Revival in Patchogue

The revival of the iconic Shands General at 67 W. Main Street in Patchogue is set to debut this month, bringing new life to a historic building. Formerly known as the BrickHouse Brewery, this establishment is ready to open its doors with a fresh dining experience while honoring its rich history.

Originally operated as a general store by James G. Shand in the late 1800s, the building is one of the oldest in the village. Bert Wiegand and his group of millennial restaurateurs, who took over the space in 2023, have worked meticulously to preserve its historical essence. They’ve added antique brass railings, white marble floors, and tri-fold windows that open to the street, creating an Italian patio ambiance.

The new Shands General will offer three distinct dining areas: an Italian patio vibe at the front, a spacious 40-foot bar with high ceilings and large booths, and a cozy main dining room. It is designed to accommodate between 140 to 145 guests.

Wiegand, along with James McPeak, Francis Derby, Sean Burke, and siblings Steve and Julian Rizzo, transformed the upstairs into The State Room, an intimate cocktail bar that has been popular since its opening in February 2023. Now, they are preparing to unveil the downstairs restaurant on June 26.

Fire Island National Seashore Announces Limited Services at Barrett Beach/Talisman

The Fire Island National Seashore (FIIS) announces that services at Barrett Beach/Talisman will be limited this season due to winter storm damage and the nesting activity of the endangered piping plover.

Superintendent Alexcy Romero explained that "no lifeguarded beach and sporadic restroom maintenance will be available" due to the difficulties posed by beach narrowing, nesting activity, and shoaling. These challenges have made it hard for seashore staff to maintain visitor services.

Visitors can still enjoy lifeguarded beaches, restroom facilities, and other services at nearby Watch Hill and Sailors Haven. Barrett Beach/Talisman, known as a boater’s paradise, is accessible only by private boat, on foot, or by charter ferry from Patchogue or Sayville.

At Barrett Beach/Talisman, amenities include a dock for boaters, a boardwalk trail to the ocean beach, restrooms, and a picnic area. However, the Talisman restrooms are currently closed, and visitors must use the facilities closest to the ocean beach.

For more updates, visit the Fire Island National Seashore website.
