Day in History

"A Night of Music, Entertainment, and Modern Convenience: 1949 Patchogue Variety Show"

In a throwback to November 15, 1949, Patchogue’s community was invited to an evening filled with music, entertainment, and modern marvels at the Patchogue High School Auditorium. Advertised with the enticing slogan “A Peek Under the Tent,” this free "Variety Show" encouraged attendees to bring their spouses and enjoy a lineup that included lively music, engaging entertainment, quiz shows, and community singing. It was an event tailored for both amusement and a touch of domestic innovation.

The show was sponsored by the Patchogue Electric Light Company (PELCO) in collaboration with local appliance dealers, aiming to introduce homemakers to the ease and affordability of electric cooking. Attendees were promised not only a fun-filled night but also an opportunity to explore the “Home on the Range Electric,” a modern kitchen appliance that PELCO proudly highlighted. An old-fashioned appliance auction concluded the evening, allowing one lucky household to take home the demonstration electric range.

PELCO, a fixture in Southern Brookhaven since 1888, leveraged this event to showcase the advantages of electric appliances, emphasizing their commitment to serving the community with clean and efficient energy solutions.
