Day in History

ā€œDriver Takes a Detour: A Patchogue Mishap on the Tracksā€

In the quiet evening hours of December 26, 1934, Patchogue witnessed a peculiar incident that left residents and onlookers both amused and perplexed. Ingvnl Haave, a newcomer to the area and an employee of a local milk company, took an unexpected detour while navigating the streets. Mistaking the Long Island Railroadā€™s freight spur and main line for Division Street, Haave inadvertently drove his coupe along the tracks, unaware of his error until it was too late.

This marked the second such incident in the area that week, reminding locals of the challenges faced by new arrivals in navigating their growing town.
