Highlights from Patchogue’s May 12 Village Board Meeting
The Village of Patchogue Board of Trustees gathered on Monday, May 12, and while the meeting covered a wide range of local issues. Here’s what you need to know:
🚫 Two Parking Spots Removed for Pedestrian Safety
The board held a public hearing and voted to amend the village code to remove two parking spaces directly in front of Tina’s Ice Cream Parlor on West Main Street. Why? Those spots were blocking drivers’ views of the crosswalk, creating a dangerous situation—especially as summer foot traffic increases. Trustee feedback and a site visit confirmed that crossing the street there was, in the mayor’s words, “frightening.” Expect improved striping and additional visibility measures in that area soon.
💐 Business Improvement Efforts Blooming
David Kennedy, Executive Director of the Business Improvement District (BID), shared that beautification efforts are underway. Expect to see hanging baskets brightening Main Street in the coming weeks. The BID is also applying for a Suffolk County grant to revitalize Waverly Avenue with new lighting, sidewalks, and a stronger connection to downtown businesses.
⚾ Ballfields, Beach Passes, and Pickleball
From baseball to beach clubs, the Parks Department is getting ready for a busy season. The new village ballfield is nearly complete, pending some final touches and lighting from PSEG. Summer program registration opens May 27 for village residents, with staggered times by age to reduce lines. Mark your calendar for the first-ever Marsha Chasin Memorial Pickleball Tournament on May 31 at the Ford Sisters Tennis Courts.
🐟 Big Win for Local Wildlife
A new fish ladder project is moving forward at Patchogue Lake thanks to a collaboration with Suffolk County. The ladder will help species like alewives, American eels, and even river otters migrate more safely by bypassing the dam behind Blue Point Brewery. It’s a small step with big environmental impact.
🧹 Village Services: Smarter Spending
The board approved a move to switch sanitation providers to Winter Bros, a change expected to save the village between $25,000 and $30,000 per year. Trustees also authorized a new intermunicipal agreement with the Town of Brookhaven for recyclables and street sweeping.
📝 Final Notes
The Spice & Tea Exchange has its ribbon-cutting May 16.
The long-delayed hotel application will be resubmitted with updated plans for full review by the zoning board.
