Patchogue Man Pleads Guilty to Dismembering Woman and Concealing Her Death
Gary Cowell, a 72-year-old Patchogue resident, pleaded guilty on Thursday to charges of concealing a human corpse and tampering with evidence after dismembering the body of Yvette Leonard, 56, in June of last year, according to court records. Cowell is set to receive the maximum sentence of 1ā to 4 years in state prison.
Defense attorney Jeremy Scileppi stated that Cowell has consistently cooperated with the investigation and has taken full responsibility for his actions, calling the situation "a very tragic set of circumstances."
Prosecutors reported that Leonard, a longtime acquaintance of Cowell, was last seen heading toward his home on Edwards Street on June 13. Her son, Malyk Leonard, led a determined search for his mother, distributing flyers and turning to social media after her disappearance was reported by a roommate. Tragically, her remains were discovered in multiple locations along Montauk Highway near Sills Road in East Patchogue on June 22.
While prosecutors believe Leonard died in Cowell's presence between June 14 and June 21, the cause of her death remains undetermined, and Cowell has not been charged with causing her death. Suffolk County Assistant District Attorney Kieran Rogers revealed that Cowell dismembered Leonardās body using an ax, allegedly to delay the investigation into her disappearance, which had already garnered significant attention.

New York State Freedom Train: A Journey Through Liberty and Justice
Seventy-five years ago, the New York State Freedom Train inspired communities with its traveling exhibits of liberty and democracy.
The New York State Freedom Train, launched in 1949, brought history to life by showcasing foundational documents of democracy across the state. Its first display car, repurposed from New York Central coach car #2117, embodied the ideals of Liberty and Justice with interiors painted in light blue and gold. The train housed exhibits on Religion, Press & Speech, Representative Government, and Labor, captivating visitors of all ages.

On January 6, 1950, the train made its 140th stop in Patchogue, where nearly 6,500 residents explored its exhibits despite the foggy weather. With four bay-window-style document cases, up to 40 schoolchildren at a time were able to view historical treasures like an early draft of Lincolnās Emancipation Proclamation, Washingtonās Farewell Address, and John Peter Zengerās trial documents, which established freedom of the press.
Sponsored locally by The Patchogue Advance and community leaders, the trainās visit was celebrated as one of the areaās most impactful events. Local historical artifacts were also displayed at Brookhaven Town Hall, complementing the trainās exhibits. This āclassroom on wheelsā fostered a deep appreciation for democracy and unity.
