South Country Middle School Robotics Team Takes Home Top Honors
In a display of ingenuity and teamwork, the Middle School Robotics Team clinched a coveted Judges' Award for Best Robot Design at the recent SLO First Robotics League competition. The event, held at William Floyd High School, saw over 20 schools vying for the top positions with their innovative robotic creations.
Under the guidance of Mr. K, a dedicated instructor and mentor, the team has been part of a program that not only challenges students technically but also enhances their presentation skills. This year, the team included mostly sixth graders, and notably, one exceptional seventh grader who led the group with commendable leadership and skill.
During the competition, each team was tasked with designing a robot capable of performing specific games, which included autonomous maneuvers and interactive tasks involving various simple machines. Scoring was based on the robot's performance in these games, testing both the design's effectiveness and the team's ability to work cohesively under pressure.
Mr. K expressed his gratitude towards the school board and the local community for their ongoing support, highlighting the importance of such programs in fostering real-life skills in students. "This program provides a unique blend of technical challenges and real-world applications. It's a fantastic learning opportunity for our students," he shared during his address to the school board.

Local History
Once Constables, Now "Policemen" Called "Special'
Above was a headline from the The Patchogue Advance 4/27/34
On April 27, 1934, a pivotal change took place in the policing structure of Brookhaven town, which significantly impacted the local law enforcement in Patchogue and surrounding areas. Originally appointed as special constables with a primary focus on managing highway traffic, six officers were officially reclassified as "special policemen" through a resolution passed by the town board. This change was a response to a recent amendment in town law that eliminated the civil service requirements previously necessary for such positions.
The reclassification broadened the scope of the officers' responsibilities, enabling them to handle a wider range of both civil and criminal duties. This move was part of a broader strategy to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of local law enforcement, reflecting the evolving needs of the community during that era. The transition marked a significant shift in the town's approach to policing, expanding from a limited focus on traffic-related issues to a more comprehensive law enforcement role. This change was also indicative of a period where local governance was adapting to greater demands for public safety and regulatory enforcement, setting a precedent for the future development of police services in the area.
This historical shift from a small team of constables to a modern police force with comprehensive responsibilities illustrates how changes initiated in the past have laid the groundwork for our modern police force and changes in society. A fascinating peek at the much more rural population of 28,291 in 1930 vs 485,773 in 2020.
