Patchogue Village Shines with $3 Million State Grant for Solar Initiative

Patchogue Village recently celebrated a significant boost for its green initiatives with a $3 million state grant aimed at enhancing its solar infrastructure. Mayor Paul Pontieri received the exhilarating news directly from New York Governor Kathy Hochul, marking a pivotal moment for the village's commitment to sustainable development.

The grant, part of New York's ambitious Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act, which targets six gigawatts of distributed solar by 2025, will fund solar panels at the LIRR train station parking lot owned by the village. This solar project, totaling $5 million, will allow Patchogue to bond an additional $1 million towards enhancing local parks, with the state covering the majority of the costs.

Strategically located on Division Street, the parking lot will be transformed into a covered facility featuring solar panels and six to eight electric vehicle charging stations. The solar power generated, estimated at 880 kilowatts by Johnson Controls, will not only contribute to the state’s energy grid but will also significantly reduce the village's annual electricity expenses, particularly at its sewer plant.

The initiative is set to begin real work in June, following extensive planning. Mayor Pontieri's proactive approach, demonstrated by his visits to other solar-equipped stations like Lindenhurst, has been praised by Gov. Hochul as a leading example for communities statewide.

The Glenn D. Loucks Games Set to Showcase Exceptional Talent in Girls Distance Races

The upcoming Glenn D. Loucks Games are once again poised to highlight some of the most talented female distance runners in the state. This year, the focus is particularly intense on the girls' mile and 3200m races, each promising thrilling competition and potential record-breaking performances.

In the mile, the spotlight is on Dylan McElhinney, Zariel Macchia, and Sophia McInnes. McElhinney, from Hunter, leads with a season-best of 4:40.82, closely followed by Macchia of Floyd, who clocks in at 4:41.37. McInnes, hailing from Bayport-Blue Point, isn't far behind with a time of 4:44.34. This trio's participation could turn the race into one of the most competitive the state has ever witnessed.

The 3200m race will feature a strong attempt by Zariel Macchia to break the 10-minute barrier, following her personal records in the mile and 3000m. Her previous best in the 3200m stands at 10:08, but her current form suggests she could substantially improve on this time. Sophia McInnes, despite a demanding schedule, is expected to be Macchia's main competition, with a 3K best of 9:43 from last year indicating her strong potential.
