Patchogue Advance - August 16, 1951
Consolidation Sparks Creation of New Schools
On August 15, 1951, The Patchogue Advance reported on the voters approving the consolidation of the Patchogue and Medford School Districts, setting the stage for what would eventually become the foundation of our current school district. The formal consolidation, pending a final order from District Superintendent Walter M. Ormsby, was to take effect in September 1951.
This pivotal decision marks the beginning of a significant transformation in local education. Students from Medford, who would have attended Bellport High School, are now enrolling at Patchogue High School to streamline their class schedules.
The consolidation was expected to result in the construction of two new schools. Initially, there were plans to convert the Medford Avenue Grammar School into a junior high and build a new elementary school. However, it was later decided to retain the Medford Avenue school as an elementary facility and build both a new junior high and an additional elementary school to better serve the growing student population.
This consolidation represents the starting point of the unified school district we have today.
