Bayport-Blue Point Fights for Fair Play After Controversial Tennis Final Loss

What should have been a proud moment for Bayport-Blue Point’s boys tennis team—after pushing defending champion Ross School to the brink in the Suffolk County small school championship—has turned into a dispute that could reshape the final result. Though Ross was declared the winner on court with a narrow 4-3 margin, BBP coaches and players are contesting the outcome over the use of a possibly ineligible player.

The Phantoms, who posted strong wins in two doubles matches and battled through a nail-biting second doubles victory by juniors Luke Jensen and Nick Byman, believe their effort deserves fair recognition. Central to their appeal is the enforcement of the “representation rule,” which mandates that postseason players must have participated in at least six matches during the regular season.

When starting lineups were exchanged, Ross coaches could not initially verify that a third doubles player met that requirement. Despite this, both teams agreed to let the match proceed. Suspicion arose when the required documentation later appeared in the Ross scorebook, raising concerns about whether it was altered mid-match.

BBP coach John Selvaggio and the team are now awaiting a decision from Section XI, Suffolk’s high school sports authority. A ruling is expected Wednesday and could see Bayport-Blue Point awarded its first-ever county title—if the appeal is upheld.
