From Riverhead to Old Bethpage: How the Long Island County Fairs Evolved Over Nearly a Century

The Suffolk County Fair of 1929 in Riverhead featured auto racing, horse racing, circus acts, and prize-winning agricultural displays. Today, the tradition continues through the Long Island Fair at Old Bethpage Village Restoration, where history and community come together once more.

In 1929, the Suffolk County Fair, organized by the Suffolk County Agricultural Society, was a much-anticipated event at the Riverhead Fairgrounds. It featured a wide array of entertainment, from horse and auto races to circus performances headlined by international stars like May Wirth. The fair showcased local agriculture, with prize-winning displays, including what was then the largest poultry show in New York State. The event was a vibrant celebration of community spirit, with neighbors gathering to compete, watch thrilling sports, and enjoy performances. The fair remained a staple in Riverhead until 1936, when the land was sold to the local school district.

Fast forward to 2024, the tradition continues through the Long Island Fair, now held at Old Bethpage Village Restoration. Although modern in location, the fair still echoes its origins from the 1800s. The Agricultural Society of Queens, Nassau, and Suffolk Counties, one of the oldest agricultural societies in the country, continues to organize the fair. Held this year from September 13 to 15, the Long Island Fair at Old Bethpage replicates the original fairgrounds, complete with livestock barns, exhibition halls, and the Superintendent's Office. The event focuses on preserving historical traditions, with agricultural exhibits, competitions, and family-friendly activities rooted in Long Island's rich history.

Though times have changed and the fair's locations have shifted, the spirit of community and celebration of local heritage remain central, connecting generations through a shared agricultural and cultural legacy.
