Summary of Bellport Waterfront Management Commission Public Information Session
Mayor Maureen Veitch opened the session, emphasizing the importance of public input for the proposed marina project. Trustees, members of the Waterfront Commission, and project staff were recognized for their efforts in organizing the event.
The village secured a $2.8 million HUD grant in 2022, covering 75% of the costs to improve marina safety and infrastructure. The remaining 25% will be funded by the village. The grant's primary goal is to ensure safety, particularly for fire, EMS, and police boats.
The meeting served as an opportunity for the public to provide feedback on the marina's proposed redesign. Community input is critical to finalizing the design.
Attendees were guided through three stations—project goals and timeline, existing conditions, and proposed designs. Surveys were provided in hard copy and online to collect feedback.
VHB, the consulting firm, presented their qualifications. Local team members and their successful projects, such as Patchogue's Shorefront Park restoration, were highlighted as evidence of their coastal engineering expertise.
An assessment of existing conditions revealed several concerns, including deteriorated docks, safety risks near the boat launch, sediment buildup caused by ferry operations, limited electricity on docks, and accessibility challenges.
Proposed Design Plans:
- Phase 1: Install a wave attenuator to reduce wave impact and repair deteriorated walls at Osborne Park and The Rock Dock.
- Phase 2: Replace the stick dock with a floating dock and consider relocating the ferry dock to improve accessibility from parking areas.
Safety and Environmental Considerations: The design is based on extensive studies of wave action, wind conditions, and future sea level rise projections. These factors aim to ensure long-term safety and functionality.
Key Public Feedback:
- Concerns about relocating the ferry dock and safety near the boat launch.
- Suggestions for a more inclusive marina design accommodating different types of boats and improving pedestrian connections.
- Requests for additional amenities, such as reliable dock electricity.
Feedback from the session and surveys, open until November 21, will inform the final concept design. The project will move into permitting and detailed design phases in 2025, with construction anticipated to follow.
