NY Honors Dolphus Knowles on His 100th Birthday

Dolphus Knowles was celebrated by the New York State Senate on his 100th birthday with a special resolution. A long-time resident of Hamilton, New York, Dolphus is also the oldest living member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8300 in East Patchogue.

On February 28, 2024, Dolphus Knowles achieved a remarkable milestone—his 100th birthday. In recognition, the New York State Senate introduced Resolution No. 2386 on May 8, 2024, sponsored by Senator Murray, to honor his centennial.

7-Eleven Opens at Former Island Grill Site in East Patchogue

A significant redevelopment has revitalized a once-neglected spot in East Patchogue as a new 7-Eleven gas station and convenience store opens at the former site of the Island Grill diner on Hospital Road. The opening ceremony, attended by local officials and community members, marked a fresh start for the area.

In a recent feature by Nick Esposito for Greater Patchogue, the community welcomed the new 7-Eleven store and gas station, which has taken over the site near Long Island Community Hospital. This location had been vacant for about a decade after the closure of the Island Grill diner and had subsequently deteriorated, becoming a haven for squatters.

Christopher Stephens, the franchise owner, moved his 7-Eleven from its previous location across the street, now offering 12 gas pumps and a nearly 3,000 square foot store. The grand opening featured a symbolic $711 donation to the Suffolk County Police Department’s 5th Precinct from Stephens, showing appreciation for their service. Further plans include the removal of gas tanks from the old 7-Eleven site across the street and preparing it for sale, as reported by Newsday.

Historic Season Ends for Farmingdale State in NCAA Lacrosse Championship First Round

The Farmingdale State College men's lacrosse team concluded their most successful season with a 16-8 loss against St. Mary’s College of Maryland in the first round of the 2024 NCAA Division III Men's Lacrosse Championship. Despite the setback, the Rams' record-breaking season included a first-ever national tournament appearance and a commendable 16-4 finish.

In a challenging match at St. Mary's City, Maryland, Farmingdale State's journey in the 2024 NCAA Division III Men’s Lacrosse Championship came to an end. The Rams, who have consistently shown strong form over the past seasons, faced a tough opponent in the St. Mary's Seahawks, who took an early lead and maintained control throughout the game. St. Mary’s demonstrated a strong offensive game, scoring the first six goals. Thomas Stock, Farmingdale’s senior attackman from Selden and Skyline Conference Offensive Player of the Year, broke their run with a goal just before the first period ended.

Despite efforts by Tyler Kollar of Bellport, who scored three goals, and senior Rob Varello from Smithtown, who contributed significantly in the second half, the Rams couldn't close the gap created by St. Mary's early dominance. Kollar’s performance highlighted his impactful season, while Stock wrapped up his collegiate career with impressive school records for goals and points.

The Seahawks’ victory propels them to the second round of the tournament, where they will face Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. Meanwhile, Farmingdale State can reflect on a historic season that not only set new school records but also solidified their status as a formidable force in collegiate lacrosse.
