Labor Day

The “no white after Labor Day” rule, long perpetuated by grandmothers and fashion magazines alike, can trace its origins back to the Gilded Age elite. During this period, wealthy families would escape to cooler coastal areas, where wearing white was both practical and a symbol of status. White reflected the heat and was worn during leisure activities like tennis, where it helped mask sweat—a crucial consideration in an era when public displays of perspiration were frowned upon.

However, as fall arrived, the wealthy packed away their white clothing, not just because of the cooling temperatures, but due to the dirty, unsanitary streets of cities like New York, where white garments would quickly become soiled. Over time, this practical consideration morphed into a fashion rule.

By the early 20th century, improvements in sanitation and the rise of the automobile rendered the rule obsolete. Influential figures like Coco Chanel began wearing white year-round, and fashion magazines followed suit, showcasing winter whites.

Despite the persistence of this old wives' tale, today’s fashion-forward thinkers have largely discarded the rule. From Coco Chanel to Michelle Obama, wearing white after Labor Day is no longer seen as a faux pas, but rather as a statement of style and modernity. It’s time to embrace white as a year-round option, free from outdated restrictions.
