Brookhaven Town Demolishes Longtime Vacant "Zombie House" in Medford

On May 14, Brookhaven Town took action to improve the Medford community by demolishing a longtime vacant "zombie house" at 56 Barbara Lane. Town Supervisor Dan Panico was present as the dilapidated property, which had been abandoned and exposed to the elements for years, was torn down. The house had become a community blight, drawing numerous resident complaints about issues such as squatters, rodents, and illegal drug activities.

The demolition was carried out under Chapter 73 of the Town Code, which allows for a "fast track" removal of unsafe structures, ensuring neighborhoods remain safe and pleasant. The costs associated with the demolition, debris removal, and land restoration will be borne by the property owner.

Residents can watch the demolition and learn more about similar efforts in the Town of Brookhaven on the Town's website or Brookhaven Cable TV Channel 18. .

Governor Hochul Launches Construction of Affordable Housing Development in East Patchogue

Elected officials, state and local leaders joined developers Friday for a groundbreaking of The Grove, a $33.75 million affordable and supportive housing project in East Patchogue. This development will create 150 construction jobs and seven permanent positions, with an expected completion time of 18 months.

The Grove, a 55-unit mixed-use development, aims to provide much-needed affordable housing, with 17 units dedicated to residents requiring support services. The three-building complex will feature environmentally sustainable elements such as on-site solar panels and Energy Star appliances.

Part of Governor Hochul's $25 billion Housing Plan, The Grove contributes to the effort to create or preserve 100,000 affordable homes across New York, including 10,000 with support services for vulnerable populations. All 55 apartments will be available to households earning up to 90% of the Area Median Income. Support services for 17 units will be provided by New Ground Inc., a Long Island non-profit, offering financial literacy and career development assistance.

The project is financed with $21.1 million in Federal and State Low Income Housing Tax Credit equity, $2.4 million in state subsidies, and $1.8 million in loans from Suffolk County. The development also includes nearly 1,000 square feet of commercial space.

Aligned with the town of Brookhaven’s Montauk Highway Corridor Revitalization Plan, this initiative aims to enhance neighborhood walkability and reduce blight.
