Memorial Day

Join the Bellport Memorial Day Parade on May 27

This Memorial Day, the Bellport community is invited to honor and remember those who have served our country at the annual Memorial Day Parade. Scheduled for Monday, May 27, the event will run from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., offering a meaningful way to commemorate the holiday.

The parade will commence at 11:00 a.m. at the Village Green, located at the corner of Bellport Lane and Bell Street. Participants will march north along Station Road, concluding the procession at Woodland Cemetery.

Patchogue's Memorial Day Parade on May 27

As Memorial Day approaches, the Patchogue community is invited to gather for a heartfelt tribute to the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our country. The Memorial Day Parade and Ceremony will take place on Monday, May 27, starting at 11:00 AM.

The parade starts off at Main Street, beginning at the intersection of Rt 112, and will continue to the Four Corners. From there, it will head south on South Ocean Avenue, culminating at the American Legion Post.

Schools

$50,000 in Scholarships to Local High School Seniors

Island Federal Credit Union (Island Federal) has demonstrated its commitment to supporting local students by awarding $50,000 in college scholarships to 11 graduating high school seniors. This year's recipients include standout students from Bayport and Bellport, highlighting the exceptional talent in our community.

Since the inception of the Scholarship program in 1992, Island Federal has awarded scholarships to 375 local high school graduates, totaling $910,000. This year's $10,000 scholarship recipients include Megan Young from Bayport-Blue Point High School. Rachel Petri from Bellport High School is among the $2,500 scholarship winners. Their dedication and hard work have earned them recognition and support as they prepare for the college journey.

The Island Federal Scholarship Program continues to play a crucial role in helping local students pursue higher education and achieve their dreams. The community congratulates all the recipients and wishes them success in their future endeavors.

Bayport-Blue Point Debate Team Honored for State Championship Success

BAYPORT, NY—In early May, the Bayport-Blue Point High School Debate Team received special recognition from the Board of Education for their outstanding performance at the New York State Forensic League (NYSFL) State Championship.

Students George R. and Yuvraj T. were celebrated for their remarkable achievement in the JV Public Forum Debate, where they placed sixth out of 62 teams. The championship took place on April 13 and 14 at The Bronx School of Science.

The duo debated the resolution, “The United Nations should abolish permanent membership of its Security Council,” demonstrating exceptional critical thinking and debate skills. Their success at the state level highlights the hard work and dedication of the entire debate team.

The Board of Education's recognition on May 7 underscores the importance of academic and extracurricular achievements in the Bayport-Blue Point School District. The community congratulates George R. and Yuvraj T. for their accomplishments and looks forward to their future successes.

 National Park Service Invites Public Input on Fire Island's Off-Road Vehicle Plan

The National Park Service (NPS) is calling on the public to share their thoughts on the Off-Road Vehicle Management Plan for Fire Island National Seashore. This initiative is part of the NEPA regulations to ensure environmental protection.

The NPS has opened the public comment period starting May 28, 2024. Residents and stakeholders can voice their opinions at an in-person meeting on June 5, 2024, at the Patchogue Ferry Terminal at 7 p.m., or at a virtual meeting on June 13, 2024, at 6:30 p.m. The comment period will close on June 30, 2024.

Special Watermedia Workshop on June 5

Art enthusiasts, mark your calendars for a unique opportunity to dive into the vibrant world of watermedia at a special workshop hosted by Jim Minet. Scheduled for June 5, 2024, from 6:30 to 8:30 PM, this two-hour session promises an immersive, hands-on experience with a variety of premium art materials.

Participants will explore Holbein’s extensive range of watermedia, including Holbein Artists’ Watercolor, watercolor mediums, Artists’ Gouache, Acrylic Gouache, and acrylic colors. The workshop will also feature Legion Paper’s 100% cotton Stonehenge Aqua paper in different weights, surface finishes, and colors, as well as Yupo 100% polypropylene paper. In addition, attendees will use General Pencil graphite and charcoal products, erasers, and brush cleaner.

To secure your seat, registration is necessary. PAC members or registered PGSB 2024 artists can attend for free, while non-members can join for a fee of $10.00. Don’t miss this exciting opportunity to enhance your artistic skills and knowledge.

Local Sports

Bayport Boys Tennis Shines in Thrilling Section XI Playoffs

The Section XI boys tennis playoffs have commenced, bringing a wave of excitement as local teams compete for the championship title. Bayport has been a standout contender, showcasing exceptional skill and determination in each match.

The playoffs kicked off on Tuesday, May 21, with matches held at the higher-seeded teams' venues. Bayport, seeded third, played a crucial game at home against a competitive opponent on May 21 at 3:30 p.m. Their impressive performance has set the stage for their continued success in the tournament.

On Wednesday, May 22, another round of intense matches took place. Bayport's victory has secured them a spot in the finals, where they will face off against Ross. vying for the title.

The championship match is scheduled for Friday, May 24, at Smithtown East High School at 2pm. Fans and supporters are encouraged to attend the matches and cheer on Bayport as they aim for the Section XI championship.
