A Historic Home’s Journey Across the Bay: A Remarkable Feat of 1928

The December 7, 1928, issue of The Patchogue Advance recounts a fascinating spectacle: the relocation of the historic Carman home from Massapequa to Bellport via the Great South Bay. This grand, colonial-style house, constructed in 1811, took an extraordinary journey aboard three large scows, drawing the curious eyes of shoreline residents as it cruised steadily towards its new destination on Howell’s Point.

The 44-foot-long and 34-foot-deep home, notable for its fine craftsmanship and original finishes, had to make way for suburban development in Massapequa. Its new owner, William Hickins, of Bellport, commissioned James A. Brownie to orchestrate the move. Starting near Amityville, the house was loaded onto scows and towed by a tugboat in what must have been a delicate and intricate operation.

Residents along the bay were treated to an unusual sight: the stately home gliding along the water like a floating mansion. The event, both practical and whimsical, captivated onlookers and became the talk of the community. Once settled on Barberry Road in Bellport, the home was destined for a new life as a permanent residence overlooking the bay.

This extraordinary feat highlights the ingenuity of the era, the value placed on preserving history, and the lengths to which one could go to maintain a sense of architectural heritage. The story of the Carman home is a testament to the enduring appeal of Long Island’s historic homes and the creative efforts made to preserve them.
