War’s End Shuts Down Patchogue Cottage Mill, Leaving 250 Without Work
In September 1945, Patchogue felt the sharp jolt of war’s end when the Bossert-Bailey mill, located at the head of the Patchogue River, was forced to halt nearly all operations. The federal government had suddenly terminated its contract for 30,000 prefabricated cottages intended for England, part of the now-concluded lend-lease program that supported U.S. allies during World War II.
For nearly five months, the mill had served as a vital hub of wartime production, transforming the former Bailey Lumber Yard into a center for building temporary housing. About 330 cottages had been completed and shipped overseas when the order was cut short. The facility, managed by Charles Bossert and overseen locally by plant manager Henry Schmeckpeper, had employed 253 workers and generated a weekly payroll of $15,000—an economic cornerstone for the village during the final months of the war.
Patchogue, once known for its textile mills, lumber yards, and boat building, had adapted to wartime demands, with Bossert-Bailey emerging as a promising post-war industry. Though most workers were laid off immediately, Schmeckpeper noted the closure might be temporary, with plans to shift production toward the domestic housing market. Still, this moment marked a dramatic shift for the village, as it moved from wartime productivity into the uncertainties of peace.
Patchogue’s former Bossert-Bailey mill found new life in May 1946 when it was purchased by the Adirondack Log Cabin Company, Inc., and its subsidiary, the Pre-Fab Housing Company. The $500,000 acquisition of the waterfront property from Campbell Industries marked a significant investment in Long Island’s post-war future.
With the new owners planning to manufacture at least 4,000 prefabricated homes each year, the site was poised to play a central role in addressing the post-war housing shortage, especially for returning veterans.
After this, The company appears in an industrial exhibit in October of 1946 in Patchogue. Unfortunately they vanish from the news after that story. It’s very probable never met the goal of 4000 houses a year since Levittown became the big story on Long Island.
