Flipping for a Cause: Patchogue Arcade Joins Fight Against Parkinson’s
In a heartwarming blend of nostalgia and philanthropy, Pinball Long Island, a local arcade in Patchogue, is setting the stage for a remarkable event this World Parkinson’s Day on April 11. Dedicating a portion of its proceeds to The Michael J. Fox Foundation, the arcade aims not only to entertain but to contribute to the battle against Parkinson’s disease.
Pinball Long Island, known for its collection of both vintage and modern pinball machines, is more than just an entertainment venue; it's a community gathering spot that, on this special day, will transform into a beacon of hope and awareness for those affected by Parkinson’s disease. Owner Josh Guskin, whose family has faced the disease firsthand, emphasizes the deep personal connection to the cause. “Parkinson’s is a serious issue,” Guskin reflects, acknowledging the disease's far-reaching impact beyond the individuals diagnosed.
The initiative is part of a broader effort to shine a light on Parkinson's during April, Parkinson’s Awareness Month, encouraging the community to rally in support of research and those affected by the neurodegenerative disorder. With the arcade’s doors open wide, offering unlimited play for a day at $20 for adults and $10 for kids, it’s an invitation to the community not only to enjoy a day of pinball but to be part of a greater cause.
This endeavor is a powerful reminder of the role local businesses can play in addressing global challenges, turning everyday activities into opportunities for impact. As the community comes together at 48 West Main St. in Patchogue, it’s a chance to make every flipper hit and high score count towards a future free from Parkinson’s disease.

Eclipse in Patchogue: A Mixed Bag of Wonder?
Patchogue's anticipation for the April 8 solar eclipse was high, with the event promising a significant but not total obscuration of the sun—90% coverage at its peak. While the eclipse didn't plunge the town into darkness like the path of totality elsewhere, it still offered a moment of shared celestial marvel.
I would say event straddled the line between amazement and disappointment. My son who was in the path of totality thought it a wonder. I might say I was a bit underwhelmed. Maybe that’s due to the hyping up of the day. Some estimates predicted an economic impact of over 5 billion dollars, more than the Super Bowl. For those immersed in the educational or communal aspects, it was a day of significant astronomical engagement. However, echoes of the total eclipse's transformative darkness left some yearning for a deeper experience.
I think the eclipse was a lesson in appreciating what we have while dreaming of what could be. It served as a powerful reminder of our place in the universe and the communal joy of looking skyward, even if it didn't completely meet the expectations set by those in the path of totality.
