Furry Friends

Join Bideawee's Adoption Event at Patchogue Medford Library"

In a special event aimed at fostering community and caring for its non-human members, the Bideawee Adoption truck will make a one-day stop at the Patchogue Medford Library this coming Saturday. Hosted in collaboration with Senzamici, this event is an excellent opportunity for residents to expand their families by adopting a pet. Not only does adopting a pet from Bideawee provide a loving animal a much-needed home, but it also opens up more space at the shelter for other animals in need.

Prospective pet owners can meet various animals from 11:00 am to 2:30 pm, ensuring these furry friends do not have to wait long for their new homes. Community members are encouraged to visit the library, situated at 54-60 E Main Street in Patchogue, and possibly meet their new best friend. This event is free of charge, making it accessible to everyone in the community. For more details, visit the eventā€™s website or call the library at 631-654-4700.

Grow Your Garden: South Country Library Community Seed Library

The South Country Library sprouted a resource for local garden enthusiasts and green thumbs with the introduction of its Seed Library. This initiative taps into the ancient yet increasingly essential practice of seed saving, which has seen a decline over the past century. The Seed Library not only aims to reconnect the community with these agrarian roots but also encourages sustainability and self-sufficiency.

Library patrons can select up to four packets of seeds per visit from a diverse selection that includes vegetables like tomatoes, carrots, and spinach, as well as herbs and flowers that attract beneficial insects. Each visitor simply needs to sign out their chosen packets, noting their name and barcode number, at the Seed Library located near the Patron Services Desk. Detailed planting instructions are provided on each packet to assist patrons in cultivating their gardens.

The initiative invites everyone to enjoy the bounty of their efforts and perhaps, in the future, contribute back to the library's collection, continuing the cycle of growth and community resilience. For more information on participating or to explore the available seeds, visitors are encouraged to stop by the South Country Library or contact them directly.

Forging Memories: Childrenā€™s Blacksmithing Workshop at Bellport-Brookhaven Historical Society

Nestled in the heart of our community, the Bellport-Brookhaven Historical Society continues to be a bastion of local heritage and learning. On May 5th, from 11:00 am to 12:00 pm, they are set to host a special event at their Blacksmith Shop. This session, led by blacksmith Tim Miller, is not just an ordinary workshop. Itā€™s a doorway to the past, designed to ignite the imaginations of young minds with the clang of hammer on anvil.

During this one-hour demonstration, Tim will showcase the techniques used to make traditional gate hardware, pieces synonymous with Bellportā€™s charm. This event is particularly significant as it connects children to the enduring trades and crafts that have defined our communityā€™s architectural and functional aesthetics.

Itā€™s a fantastic opportunity for children to learn about the mechanics and artistry behind blacksmithing. The event is free, but participants are encouraged to register in advance due to limited space. Parents and children alike are invited to come and discover a piece of our local heritage, making it an ideal outing for those interested in history, craftsmanship, or simply looking for a unique way to spend a Saturday morning.

From Ashes to Memories: The Storied History of the Rialto Theater

Nestled on S. Ocean Avenue, the theater first opened its doors as the New Unique Theater in 1913, becoming a beacon for early movie enthusiasts. Just six years later, a fire in July 1919 severely damaged the building. Undeterred, it was swiftly rebuilt and re-opened in April 1920, ushering in a new era of film screenings. By 1925, it had adopted the name Rialto Theater, only to be struck by another fire later that same year. Yet again, it rose from its ashes, reopening under the management of the Glynne & Ward circuit and later joining the Prudential Circuit chain, retaining its popularity among locals.

The theater's resilience was ultimately tested in the winter of 1978 when a catastrophic fire engulfed the building, leading to an arduous eight-hour battle against the flames. This time, the damage was irreversible, and the remains of the beloved Rialto Theater had to be razed, marking the end of an era.
