Bribery Scandal Shakes Patchogue: Deputy Sheriff Indicted for Corruption
A corruption scandal in Patchogue has sent shockwaves through Suffolk County after Deputy Sheriff Edward M. Dooley was indicted for allegedly accepting bribes to protect illegal slot machines in the area. Dooley, who was also charged with personally operating a slot machine, pleaded not guilty to both charges. His trial was set for December.
The allegations surfaced after District Attorney Smith led a crackdown on illicit gambling operations in Patchogue and Water Island. Following the raid, William Duge, the owner of the slot machines, revealed that he had been paying Dooley between $25 and $35 per week in exchange for protection. In a dramatic twist, Duge, who was expected to testify against Dooley, was also indicted for offering the bribe in the first place.
The case, which was reported in The Long Islander in 1901, created a major stir in Suffolk County. The unfolding legal battle drew significant public interest, with many eager to see how justice would be served. The revelations highlight concerns about corruption within law enforcement and illegal gambling operations.
