Whales Off Long Island

New England Aquarium

Scientists from the New England Aquarium recently observed over 80 North Atlantic right whales, including 56 in a single day, in an unusual grouping off Long Island. This critically endangered species, with fewer than 360 individuals remaining, was seen in a highly trafficked marine area, raising concerns about vessel strikes and entanglement. Researchers noted that these whales are adapting to changing ocean conditions, making this sighting important for understanding their behavior. Ongoing efforts aim to enhance protections through vessel speed restrictions.
