A Federal Milestone for Patchogue: U.S. Building Officially on the Horizon

January 25, 1927, marked a defining moment in Patchogue’s civic progress as Postmaster Harry T. Weeks announced that the village had been assured a federal building by high-level officials in Washington. Returning from a week-long trip to the capital, Weeks brought with him the news that Patchogue was now formally in line to receive a government facility within the next year or two. This would make it the first village in Suffolk County to receive such recognition.

The achievement is credited largely to Weeks’ tireless advocacy and his influential role as president of the Service Postmasters' Association, a national organization that gave him direct access to federal decision-makers. His efforts, supported by Congressman Robert L. Bacon and William R. Spilman of the Post Office Department, helped move Patchogue to the top of the list for upcoming federal construction projects.

With annual postal revenues exceeding sixty thousand dollars, Patchogue met the government's threshold for such investments. This reflects its importance as a growing hub in the region. The planned federal building is expected to house not only the post office but also additional federal agencies such as the internal revenue service and potentially a branch federal court. This positions Patchogue for continued growth and administrative significance.

This moment in local history highlights both the village’s rising stature and the impact of dedicated local leadership working in close collaboration with Washington.
