Day in History

In October 1944, as the nation prepared for a critical presidential election, over 2,450 of the 6,390 war ballots sent to Suffolk County’s servicemen were returned. The process of counting military votes, however, highlighted the limited voting rights many faced during wartime.

In 1944, although tens of thousands of young men and women from Suffolk were serving in the military, not all were eligible to vote. Many, including those as young as 17, were actively serving in World War II but were below the legal voting age of 21 at the time. Additionally, the application process for war ballots had strict deadlines, leaving some soldiers and sailors unable to cast their votes. Despite these restrictions, the military vote was seen as potentially decisive in the close election between Franklin D. Roosevelt and Thomas Dewey, especially in swing areas where every vote mattered.

Today, military voting has evolved significantly. Thanks to laws that now allow all citizens 18 and older to vote, no one serving their country is left without a voice due to age. Modern technology also ensures that military members overseas can easily register and vote, making their participation in democracy far more accessible compared to the challenging processes of 1944.
