Young Drivers Shine at First Junior Tractor Pull of 2024
The Long Island Antique Power Association (LIAPA) hosted its first junior tractor pull of 2024 on Sunday, drawing young competitors and their families to the association’s grounds on Sound Ave. in Riverhead. Despite the challenge of a dry track, 12-year-old Michael Barry of Patchogue emerged victorious, pulling 1,875 pounds.
Michael, who has been driving since the age of 5, is no stranger to competition. Alongside tractor pulling, he participates in truck pulls with an '87 Mac Steelnose and races Bandoleros at Riverhead Raceway. “Tractors are nice because it takes more work, less skill,” Michael shared. “You have to win in the garage before you show up.”
Close behind was 7-year-old Jason Yeager of Aquebogue, who placed second on his 1985 John Deere 318. Jason, who started driving at age 4, is eager to drive their big tractor in an upcoming parade, according to his father, Brad Yeager.
LIAPA President Ed Yeager announced that the junior pulling league, now in its second year, plans to hold monthly events, with the next scheduled for July 28. A special night event in August, featuring individual announcements for each young driver, promises to be a highlight.

Suffolk Sports Hall of Fame Inducts Class of 2024
On May 30, the picturesque grounds of Flowerfield in St. James hosted the annual Suffolk Sports Hall of Fame Class of 2024 Induction Ceremony. This sold-out event celebrated 24 new inductees who have significantly contributed to athletics in Suffolk County.
Established in 1990, the Suffolk Sports Hall of Fame is dedicated to honoring outstanding sports figures from the region. "These individuals represent the very best of athletics in Suffolk County," said Chris R. Vaccaro, President of the Suffolk Sports Hall of Fame. The inductees include a diverse range of athletes, coaches, sports doctors, team owners, sports broadcasters, and a historic sports figure.
Among the inductees was Gregg Giannotti, a Bellport native and co-host of "Boomer and Gio" on WFAN. "It’s such an honor to be here," Giannotti said, reflecting on his journey and the impact of his fellow inductees. "To be considered a peer with them in Suffolk County where I grew up, it really is humbling."
The ceremony emphasized the strong sense of community and the lasting legacies of those honored. This year's inductees continue to inspire greatness in Suffolk County and beyond.
