Day in History

Ad from Patchogue Advance November 1,1935

In the heart of Patchogue, a group of friends has brought a long-standing name back to life with the opening of Shands General. This modern brasserie, which offers seasonal, locally sourced fare, is located on the ground floor of a historic building under The State Room, a well-known cocktail lounge. Shands General combines a love for fresh ingredients with a respect for its past, paying tribute to the original Shand’s grocery store that served the community in the early 20th century.

In keeping with tradition, Shands General hopes to capture the warmth and nostalgia of the former grocery. Many locals remember Shand’s as a place to purchase Royal Scarlet goods, from succotash to sauerkraut, as advertised back in November 1935. Shands General aims to continue this legacy by creating a space for gathering and enjoyment with a fresh, locally focused menu that honors the building's roots.
